Must Have Foods to Have on Hand During a Lockdown

Lockdown foods for COVID-19

As we’re all painfully aware, life as we know it for the next few weeks, is going to become very different.

As a result of the global pandemic, more and more countries are being placed into lockdown in order to help prevent the virus from spreading.

Sadly, as is often the way, many people have panicked lately and have resorted to panic buying when in reality there is no need. Even during a lock down, we’re all able to visit the shops and purchase everyday essentials, which is what we’re talking about today.

With people stressed, gyms closing, and more and more of us housebound, it is vital that we eat right, not only to keep our weight under control, but also to keep our minds and bodies fit and healthy.

Here’s a look at a few must have foods to have on hand during a lockdown.

Oats

Oats are an incredibly healthy complex carbohydrate source that work wonders when it comes to health and wellness.

Many athletes and bodybuilders start their day with a bowl of porridge oats and we can see why.

Oats are great during a lockdown as you can purchase them in large packs for very little, a little goes a long way, and they’re full of natural goodness.

Oats are a great source of slow-release energy, they help reduce bad cholesterol, they contain B vitamins and minerals such as zinc, iron, and potassium, and they also taste great.

Eggs

Eggs are another food that will come in very handy during a lock down.

Eggs are probably one of the most versatile foods in the world as you can use them in so many different ways that we don’t even have time to list each one.

In terms of health benefits and the benefits on your physique, though, this is where eggs really shine.

Eggs are rich in protein, as one egg provides around 4 – 6g of protein. They are also a complete protein as they provide all essential amino acids. In fact, they also provide all non-essential amino acids – a feat no other food can achieve.

Eggs are also rich in healthy fats, choline for the brain, zinc, iron, and antioxidants such as lutein.

Frozen vegetables

Now, even though there are no food shortages, the simple fact remains that we need to remain indoors as long as possible, so as to minimize contact with other people and slow the spread of the virus.

As great as fresh vegetables are, they don’t keep very long in the fridge, and if you run out, you’ll have to make another trip to the store, and that is not what you should be doing.

By buying frozen vegetables, you can keep your veggies in the freezer for much longer.

Frozen vegetables are just as tasty as fresh, and they are preserved naturally, just as nature intended. Often you’ll find that frozen vegetables actually contain more vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants than fresh.

Frozen vegetables can be added to plenty of different dishes, and they’re great for boosting the immune system thanks to their high nutrient contents, which right now is more important than ever.

Canned tuna

Protein is essential for muscle growth and recovery, which is why canned tuna is ideal.

Full of protein, low in fat, and rich in minerals, canned tuna will keep for weeks, months, even years in your cupboard, thereby reducing your need to go to the shops for more protein for the next couple of weeks or so.

Remember, there is no food shortage, panic buying is not needed, and if you stay inside and minimize your contact with other people, we can beat this virus much faster and return to normality much quicker.
